I have to admit; I was a bit timid about taking another online course. It wasn’t because of it being online, but it was due to the fact that technology can sometimes be a strange and new concept. It often has a mind of its own and doesn’t always work the way you want it. This became clear to me as I logged on to our web conference for Wednesday. The ADOBE software on my laptop crashed, and I was completely taken aback. How can I gain access to a conference if the technology was malfunctioning.
Luckily, we were going to have another chance at a web conference. This time, I decided to use my desktop. I logged on and was ready to go. About the time we began to get into the class expectations, my desktop decided it was time to install updates. It was not going as I planned.
As I raced the clock to get my computer up and running, all I could think was that this is not how I wanted this to go at all. I must be missing out on all the information that will be extremely important to me. Luckily, it only took a few minutes to get back on.
I can say that I am thankful to be able to have weekly access to classmates and professors. I was able to ask questions regarding site mentors and other topics that I wasn’t quite clear on. I felt a relief knowing that I wasn’t the only one having technical difficulties. Although we all decided that online, self-disciplined classes were for us, we now have a clearer understanding that we are not alone.
I do plan on attending more web conferences. It is a great way to help students to become more accustomed to the online learning experience. Having this tool will greatly increase the number of people who are more confident in themselves as distance learners.
